Friendships

New Years Eve

Posted in Travel at 1:14 pm

I entered the Jardín around 10 PM to the sounds of a live band playing salsa music and people milling around. There was a bit of a thrill in the air but also calm. People walked around with sparklers selling them, 3 for 10 pesos, $1.00. Little fire crackers were being sold out of backpacks. People danced in the street and sat on benches and drank beer and took photos.

Church ended and people streamed from the doorways. Fireworks went off early on and as the night began to wind down and the clock continued to move toward the hour the square filled with more and more people until it was tightly packed, the streets, the sidewalks, the walls, the benches, the steps of the church. Sparklers were lit and more sparklers and little firebombs were thrown into the crowd and ended before hitting the ground. Music continued and so did the clock and then at midnight with the sound of the bells and the clock the air was filled with sound and smoke and cheers and hugs and kisses and sparklers above heads and fireworks being shot off a few feet away and the band continuing to play as the year moved again into another.
