A child’s tricycle sits near a pot. The tricycle is so small that I try to imagine the size of a child who could have ridden it. I see the child eager as she sits waiting to be pushed then trying to ride. I see the child growing and changing. The tricycle remains as a memory, next to a pot. The child makes the transition from this to something else keeping only the memory of this first step.

Life if filled with transitions, things changing and moving, things dying and growing, coming back to life. It is those transitions that keep us alive, that allow us to grow and change and feel reborn, that keep us awake to ourselves in the world.

I watched this little boy on his father’s shoulders as he watched the parade in San Miguel. Something about his face made me want to capture him on camera.

On a walk to the pond the swans were taking their last swims before being removed for the winter.

In a store window in Jamaica Plain.

Fall is here and everything changes.

In sync (to operate in unison)

I was standing on the roof of the apartment where I was staying in San Miguel enjoying the feeling of the sun on my skin and watching the surroundings and in the distance I heard the ever present sound of a hammer chipping away at concrete. This is a sound you hear constantly with the rebuilding of houses in this town and as I looked around i saw him, the source of the sound. He was a few buildings away also on a roof top and I watched as his arm went up and down aware that what I was seeing and hearing was different. There was a problem with the syncing of the sound and I watched as his arm went down and the hammer hit the stone and then a second later the ringing of the sound. Something about that image and sound made me think about life. How do we stay in sync with our life? How do we stay in sync with our friends, the people we love and care about? We live in a world that seems to be moving fast and furious. How do we keep ourselves in sync? And is being out of sync a bad thing?
We often think about being sync as something to do with another. But how do we stay in sync with ourselves? And if we are not in sync with ourselves can we be in sync with another? I stood on the roof and watched this man for awhile and then decided to just listen.
